City webpage covers e-bike safety

City News & Announcements Posted on December 18, 2025

With safety as its top priority, the City of Del Mar continues to update its Bike/E-Bike Safety webpage with important resources for rules of the road, classes and tips from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

In Del Mar, it is illegal to ride bicycles or e-bikes in parks, preserves, sidewalks in commercial areas and on most trails around the San Dieguito Lagoon.

On the segment of the Coast to Crest Trail in the City of Del Mar bicycles, including Class 1 and 2 e-bikes, are permitted. This puts Del Mar in line with neighboring cities and supports access for trail riders traveling through multiple jurisdictions.

These restrictions were part of a comprehensive update to the bicycle code approved by the City Council July 7, 2025. The adopted ordinance authorizes Sheriff's deputies to divert first-time bicycle and e-bike offenders to a safety training program rather than issuing a citation. The ordinance also includes definitions for bikes and e-bikes consistent with those of the California Vehicle Code and sets rules for riders and passengers.
