Are open fires allowed on the beach?: No, for safety reasons, Del Mar prohibits open fires and fire rings at the beaches, parks, preserves, and bluff-tops. The burning of any type of solid fuels such as wood, flame logs, and charcoal is prohibited. In addition to the prohibited fuels listed above, gel fuels, torches, and flame lanterns are also prohibited. Disposing of burnt material or fuels onto the waterways, beaches, parks, or open space is subject to a $1,000 fine.

Beach & Park - Permits

1. What types of events require a facility-use permit?: A Facility Use Permit is required to use the parks, beaches, or the Powerhouse Community Center involving more than 25 individuals or an event with business related services (ie. catering, lessons, vending, or other) with less than 25 people. The permit is necessary in order to balance the needs of the general public with those individuals seeking to gather for private or commercial use. 2. Can I sell sodas and hot dogs on the beach?: No, current ordinances do not allow the beach and parks to be used for commercial purposes.

4. Are charcoal barbeques allowed on the beaches and parks?: No, charcoal fuels are no longer allowed on city beaches and parks. As an alternative, visitors are welcome to cook with either barbeques or portable stoves that utilize liquid propane (LP) or similar fuel. Barbeques or cooking stoves that utilize LP are allowed on the beach and at Seagrove and Powerhouse parks only. LP barbeques and stoves shall only be used for cooking purposes and not used as heaters or fire pits.

5. Is alcohol allowed on the beach?: Alcohol is not allowed on the beach, beach accesses, park lands, and public parking lots from 12:01 a.m. on March 1st through the day after labor day at midnight. Alcohol is not allowed year round on city sidewalks and streets. Please remember that our parks and beaches are for everyone’s enjoyment.

6. Are tents and canopies allowed on the beaches or parks?: Tents are prohibited on city beaches, parks, preserves, bluff tops, or open spaces. Sunshades, beach cabanas, or canopies that are no larger than 10 feet by 10 feet in size and that have no more than two walls or 180 degrees of coverage are allowed on the beach or at Seagrove Park or Powerhouse Park. Sunshades or canopies that impair the Lifeguards ability to scan the beach or park may have to be removed.
