staff receives first aid training

City staff on Wednesday completed “First on the Scene” training provided by County Service Area-17 and American Medical Response. The session covered hands-only CPR and how to operate automated external defibrillators. Participants also practiced how to control bleeding, move patients to safety and respond to severe allergic reactions and overdoses. A public training session is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Del Mar Civic Center.

Shores Park

Council advances Shores Park master planning 

Master planning for Shores Park continued Sept. 8 as the City Council voted unanimously to reaffirm guiding principles and preferred park amenities to improve the City-owned property at 9th Street and Stratford Court.


The Council’s action included establishing a new Shores Park Master Plan Ad-hoc Advisory Committee to advise staff and Councilmembers on completion of the master plan for the property. The Council named Mayor Terry Gaasterland and Councilmember John Spelich to serve as liaisons to the committee.


Community members can apply online to serve on the Shores Park Master Plan Ad-hoc Advisory Committee.

Tomorrow: Recycling event at Shores Park 

Ready to clear some clutter?


The City of Del Mar and EDCO are sponsoring a free recycling, shredding and mulch event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at the lower parking lot of Shores Park. Enter off of Stratford Court south of Ninth Street.


Residents can responsibly dispose of electronic waste, fluorescent bulbs, household batteries and sharps.


Household hazardous waste and pharmaceuticals will not be accepted.


A certified paper shredder will provide onsite shredding of up to three banker boxes full of documents per household.


Residents also can self-load up to three barrels of mulch and compost while supplies last. The event is open to City of Del Mar residents and businesses only. The collection of sharps is limited to residents only.

Paving completed on Via de la Valle

A busy segment of Via de la Valle just east of Del Mar received a curb-to-curb layer of fresh pavement this week. 


On Monday, crews are scheduled to finish painting road markings, according to the City of San Diego.


The new blacktop between Jimmy Durante Boulevard and San Andres Drive is part of a $4.3 million program that includes pedestrian and traffic signal improvements along 1.83 "lane miles."

SANDAG RAIL PROJECTS

SANDAG rail construction notice: Week of Sept. 15

In a weekly notice to the City of Del Mar, SANDAG covers planned construction activities for the Del Mar Bluffs 5 Stabilization Project for the week of Sept. 15. 


The notice also states geotechnical testing for the proposed LOSSAN Rail Realignment Project will continue next week on Recuerdo Drive in Del Mar Heights and begin on 10th Street near Camino Del Mar on Tuesday.


Looking ahead, round-the-clock construction for the bluffs stabilization project is planned from 10 p.m. Sept. 19 through 5 a.m. Sept. 22 during a full closure of the railway.

The Del Mar Foundation's annual community picnic is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Powerhouse Park. Food, games and music by the band Prairie Sky will delight guests of all ages. No registration is required.

Friends of the Del Mar Library seek board members 

The Friends of the Del Mar Library are seeking volunteers to serve on the group's Board of Directors.


The nonprofit Friends guide and support the library on the purchasing of materials and programming of concerts, lectures, story times and craft workshops.


Board members' time commitment is minimal.


New board members will join their colleagues in planning a full program of activities for 2026, the 30th anniversary of the branch at its location on Camino del Mar at 13th Street.

This year, the City's nonprofit partner is celebrating its 25th year of serving older adults with a silver anniversary celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Del Mar Civic Center.
