Short term rental ordinance takes effect

City News & Announcements Posted on February 23, 2026

After 10 years in the making and final approvals in February 2026, Del Mar has a short term rental ordinance and permit program on the books.

Early in the month, the Coastal Commission certified short term rental regulations as adopted by the City Council in 2024. That approval placed the ordinance into immediate effect.

Later, the City Council voted unanimously Feb. 17 to set an $815 permit fee for existing operators of short term rentals. Renewals of the two-year permit are set at $598.

Designed to cover the costs of program administration, the fees would apply to 150 registered operators of existing short-term rentals.

Starting March 2, operators must complete permit applications and pay fees before a May 1 deadline.

Approved permits are good for two years and subject to renewal every two years thereafter.
