Planning Commission reviews Draft Public Safety Element

The Planning Commission voted unanimously Jan. 13 to recommend that the City Council approve draft amendments to the Safety Element of the Del Mar Community Plan.

During the review, members of the public and Planning Commission suggested possible revisions. Staff members responded that they would coordinate with the Fire Marshal on how best to address the suggestions.

Released last month for public review, the Draft Del Mar Safety Element is intended to establish policies to avoid hazards and plan ahead for natural disasters.

The Safety Element is a component of the Del Mar Community Plan, which serves as Del Mar’s State-approved General Plan.

Later this month, on Jan. 26, the Sustainability Advisory Committee is scheduled to review the Draft Safety Element as well as a second, all-new component: the Environmental Justice Element.

As drafted, the Environmental Justice Element demonstrates Del Mar’s commitment to maintain a healthy, inclusive and accessible community.

On Feb. 10, the Planning Commission is expected to review and consider recommendations on the Draft Environmental Justice Element.

City Council meetings on the draft Safety Element and Environmental Justice Element are expected in March and April.

Del Mar Day 1982
The Realm at Del Mar Day

Video captures Del Mar Day

The year was 1982. The party stretched from the beach to Camino Del Mar.

Seagrove Park, 15th Street, the vacant lot that would become L'Auberge Del Mar, the highway—all were chock-full of triathlon participants, red-shirted volunteers, Dolphin shorts, the Torrey Pines High School Marching Band, bikes and skateboards, big hair, a sandcastle contest, pancake breakfast, art show, pony rides, sack races, music...

Del Mar Day, a homespun annual event during the early 1980s, attracted great numbers of visitors.

Earlier this week, Del Mar TV published a video that captures many memories of Del Mar Day 1982.
