Contractor provides info for stressed Torrey pines

A City contractor has prepared information for residents after receiving reports of unhealthy-looking Torrey pine trees.

Last month the contractor, West Coast Arborists, Inc., assessed some City-owned trees on Pine Needles Drive after residents reported seeing die-off at the tips of branches and trees issuing great quantities of sap.

In its assessment, West Coast Arborists blames insufficient rain, poor soils and possible stress from bark beetles and fungal pathogens for the trees’ symptoms. The company recommends pruning and chemical treatments by licensed professionals in addition to careful watering and applications of mulch.

Last fall, the contractor treated all City-owned Torreys to prevent bark beetle infestations and fungal infections. The treatment is good for up to three years. As part of its routine schedule, the contractor trims City trees to maintain their health and safety.

Dialogue continues with military on aircraft noise

Even as City officials continue to engage military leaders on the topic of aircraft noise, helicopters and tilt-rotor osprey aircraft appear to be deviating from approved flight routes and complaints from residents persist.

To report a perceived offense, officials from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Naval Base Coronado urge residents to contact the bases:

A Navy official says residents should complete an online form, which provides the most accurate means of tracking aircraft and completing an investigation.

During two years of collaboration, City and base leaders have met repeatedly to address community concerns while supporting requirements of the military. The dialogue continues with regular communications between City staff and military community liaison officers.

19.7 tons collected for Fuel Reduction Program

The 2025 Fuel Reduction Program netted a record haul of 19.66 tons, according to EDCO.

The waste hauler runs the annual brush collection program in cooperation with Del Mar's fire and public works departments.

Designed to create defensible space and promote wildfire safety, the program furnishes participating residents with free containers to fill with yard waste.

EDCO's data for 2025 shows:

  • 82 3-yard containers were delivered and removed;
  • 39,320 pounds (that's 19.66 tons) of green waste was collected; and
  • 100% of the waste was recycled.

SANDAG RAIL PROJECTS

SANDAG to replace culvert at 11th Street

In a weekly notice to the City of Del Mar, SANDAG covers planned construction activities for the Del Mar Bluffs 5 Stabilization Project. Replacement of a drainage channel at the foot of 11th Street is scheduled to begin on Aug. 19 with the installation of safety fencing.

The work is part of SANDAG’s Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization Project, a multi-year program to improve drainage and strengthen the bluffs along the heavily traveled railway.

At 11th Street, replacing the culvert just east of the railroad tracks will involve two phases of construction and is expected to continue into October or November.

Phase 1 involves removing and replacing the existing concrete trench between 11th Street and Sea Orbit Lane; Phase 2 will replace the channel between 11th and 10th streets.

Limited access will be maintained as members of the public are reminded to stay clear of fenced work areas.

The bluffs stabilization program is scheduled to continue through mid-2027.

Contact SANDAG: 858-549-RAIL (7245) or lossancorridor@sandag.org.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

DM lifeguards group shot 1971

Do you remember the Del Mar Lifeguards from 1971?

Photographer Tom Keck writes
: “Joyce (Hoffman) won back-to-back world surfing titles in 1965 and ’66, and was a stand-out at Sunset for years. This was taken in 1971, I was shooting the annual Del Mar Lifeguards photo and it was Joyce’s first year, and she was probably the first female lifeguard along the California coast. So we did the normal, official group shot, and then I thought maybe we could add a bit of flair so I asked Joyce if she minded doing a cheesecake shot and she said ‘sure!’ So there you have it.”
