City responds to tsunami advisory
A tsunami advisory made for a late night for some City employees on Tuesday, but a brief rise in sea levels after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia caused no injuries, evacuations or damage in Del Mar.
Soon after the record-setting earthquake was reported, Del Mar officials and those of neighboring coastal agencies initiated hourly coordination meetings with the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services.
The meetings included officials from the National Tsunami Warning Center and State of California Office of Emergency Services.
By late Tuesday evening, lifeguards had staged vehicles and boats on high ground and, at the beach, placed barricades across the street-ends and moved waste receptacles to the back side of seawalls.
Elsewhere, Sheriff's deputies stood by after receiving maps and briefings on evacuation routes.
While the response served as valuable real-world training, thankfully the preparations were for naught.
In Del Mar, the advisory expired at 5:29 a.m. Wednesday.
