All-night bluff work this weekend to cause noise disruptions

SANDAG is warning that round-the-clock work along the railway this weekend will cause significant equipment noise and parking restrictions.

A concrete pump positioned at the end of 9th Street will generate noise. So will backup alarms from the nonstop coming and going of concrete trucks starting at 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, and continuing into the evening of Jan. 26.

No-parking restrictions are scheduled for lower 9th Street and nearby sections of Stratford Court.

The work is part of SANDAG's Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization 5 project and will coincide with a full closure of the railway for passenger and freight trains.

Night work on the bluffs is expected to continue through mid-2027.

trench on stratford court

Intermittent Stratford Court closures planned for trenching

Utility undergrounding on Stratford Court will require intermittent closures of the road between 9th and 11th streets during work hours on weekdays.

The closures are necessary to allow for safe working clearances.

Motorists are asked to avoid closed areas during working hours unless local access is required.

pine pitch canker

City contractor is watching for pine tree disease

The City of Del Mar is on the lookout for a fungal disease that infects pine trees.

Residents also should watch out for pine pitch canker, which infects Torrey pines and other conifers.

Infected branches show honey-colored legions and discolored, dying needles.

In recent surveys, Del Marโ€™s tree maintenance contractor has not detected pine pitch canker in City-owned trees in open spaces or right of way areas.

If detected, infected branches would be removed to prevent spreading the pathogen with practices that include cleaning saws and not moving firewood from the local area. Pruned areas would be treated with a phosphorous acid fungicide.

Many different insects can transmit the disease, which has infected trees in Torrey Pines State Reserve.

Removing infected branches can eliminate the disease, according to the University of Californiaโ€™s Integrated Pest Management Program.

If privately-owned trees appear diseased, residents are advised to consult a certified arborist.
