Council authorizes staff to apply for shoreline protection grants

The City Council voted unanimously Feb. 17 to authorize staff to apply for state grants totaling $7.5 million to support the San Dieguito Lagoon Shoreline Project.

One of the grant applications, to the California Ocean Protection Council, would seek $2.5 million to plan and build living levees and other improvements on the river banks of the San Dieguito River between the railroad tracks and Jimmy Durante Boulevard.

The improvements would protect homes and businesses on the south side of the river channel and the Del Mar Fairgrounds on the north side.

The other application, for the same purpose, seeks $5 million from the California State Coastal Conservancy grant program. The program prioritizes projects that protect and expand access to the coast.

Council approves short term rental permit fees

The City Council voted unanimously Feb. 17 to set an $815 permit fee for existing operators of short term rentals. Renewals of the two-year permit are set at $598.

Designed to cover the costs of program administration, the fees would apply to 150 registered operators of existing short-term rentals. Those operators must submit complete permit applications between March 2 and May 1 and pay the permit fee upon approval of their applications.

On March 2, Del Mar will launch an online portal to facilitate permit processing, enforcement and public awareness.
