Council authorizes staff to apply for shoreline protection grantsThe City Council voted unanimously Feb. 17 to authorize staff to apply for state grants totaling $7.5 million to support the San Dieguito Lagoon Shoreline Project.
One of the grant applications, to the California Ocean Protection Council, would seek $2.5 million to plan and build living levees and other improvements on the river banks of the San Dieguito River between the railroad tracks and Jimmy Durante Boulevard.
The improvements would protect homes and businesses on the south side of the river channel and the Del Mar Fairgrounds on the north side.
The other application, for the same purpose, seeks $5 million from the California State Coastal Conservancy grant program. The program prioritizes projects that protect and expand access to the coast.
