Council approves Shores Park master planning contract

The City Council voted unanimously Oct. 20 to award a contract to Schmidt Design Group to complete the Shores Park Master Plan.


The agreement calls for Schmidt to prepare concepts for review by an ad-hoc advisory committee. 


Once a preferred concept is identified, Schmidt will draft a final master plan for City Council approval.

Council requests further modifications to ordinance

After prolonged discussion Oct. 20, the City Council voted unanimously to direct staff to return Nov. 3 with further modifications to an ordinance to repeal and replace Municipal Code chapters related to trees, scenic views and sunlight regulations.

Peter Glaser

Peter Glaser celebrates 100th birthday with proclamation

Community volunteer Peter Glaser turned 100 on Oct. 23, a milestone the City Council recognized on Monday with an official proclamation.


A native of Rhode Island and U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Fleet during World War II, Glaser has lived in Del Mar since the 1990s and has lent his talents to to Friends of the Del Mar Library, the Del Mar Historical Society, Del Mar Television Foundation and Del Mar Community Connections. 


Happy birthday, Mr. Glaser!

SANDAG rail construction notice: Week of Oct. 27

In a weekly notice to the City of Del Mar, SANDAG covers planned construction activities for the Del Mar Bluffs 5 Stabilization Project and geotechnical testing for the proposed LOSSAN Rail Realignment Project.


Starting today through Monday, crews will be working round the clock and pedestrian trails may be closed, the notice states.

Del Mar Lifeguards this week presented Surf Awareness and Lifesaving Techniques to Surf P.E. students at Canyon Crest Academy High and Earl Warren Middle schools. The SALT course covers basic skills beachgoers can apply before professional responders arrive.

Tomorrow: DEA hosting annual Rx takeback

At locations across the country, the Drug Enforcement Administration is holding its Prescription Drug Take Back Day starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.


The take back site closest to Del Mar is the San Diego Police Department Northwestern Division, 12592 El Camino Real, San Diego. 


The event is designed to remove unneeded medications from homes to prevent misuse and addiction. 


Prescription drugs also can be dropped off at any Sheriff's station or substation during normal business hours.

Tonight: Full closure of NB I-5 begins near Mission Bay

Heads up, commuters: Caltrans has scheduled a full closure of northbound Interstate 5 near Mission Bay from 9 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27.


The closure of all northbound lanes between Interstate 8 and Mission Bay Drive is to allow for roadway work and concrete slab replacement, according to a news release. 


The closure is the third of several planned for the area as part of the transportation agency's I-5 Asset Management Project.

Saturday and Sunday: Halloween fun for kids and dogs

The Del Mar Foundation has scheduled Halloween fun this weekend for kids and dogs. 


From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, dress up the littles for festive fun during the Seaside Spooktacular on the ocean view deck of the Del Mar Plaza.


And from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, costumed canines can compete for ribbons during the Foundation's annual Halloween Dog Parade & Costume Contest at Powerhouse Park.


No registration is needed for the Seaside Spooktacular event. Register online for the dog parade.

CAF Cyclist

Sunday: Triathlon cyclists riding through Del Mar

Cyclists participating in the Challenged Athletes Foundation Triathlon Challenge are scheduled to ride through Del Mar between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday during a 44-mile, roundtrip journey from La Jolla Cove.


Cyclists will ride single file in small groups and are instructed to follow rules of the road. No road closures are scheduled.

The Rotary Club of Del Mar is hosting a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Del Mar Civic Center. In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, donors will receive a free A1C test.

Sharyl Massey and three live raptors will be the guests of honor during a Del Mar Foundation talk from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Del Mar Civic Center Town Hall.


San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy is cohosting the event, which includes displays of artwork by Sue Britt and photography by Del Mar resident John Weare.
