Today: Opening Day at the races

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's summer race meet begins today with a sold out celebration at the race track that will migrate later to downtown Del Mar.

By early evening, the Opening Day spectacle will bring throngs of see-and-be-seen revelers to Del Mar's restaurants, bars, streets and sidewalks. Jampacked parties are planned at Del Mar Plaza and L'Auberge Del Mar.

To prepare for the busy night and respond quickly to calls for service, Del Mar has ordered extra Sheriff’s deputies and extended hours for the City’s enforcement officers.

To improve traffic circulation, portions of northbound Camino Del Mar in front of the Del Mar Plaza and 15^th Street adjoining L’Auberge Del Mar will be closed to parking and repurposed as rideshare zones.

Extra staff from Public Works will be on hand to service waste receptacles and keep public spaces clean.

Residents are advised to prepare for traffic delays on surface streets and Interstate 5.

Sculptures return to downtown Del Mar

Colorful artwork returned to Del Mar this week as artists installed sculptures at five locations in the town center.

The pieces will remain on display for 23 months as part of the Temporary Outdoor Sculpture Program. A previous round of installations took place in 2021-22.

The nonprofit Del Mar Foundation manages and pays for the program.

Fairgrounds releases stats and survey for summer fair

Organizers of the San Diego County Fair have released a survey with a goal of improving next year's event.

In the same notice, fairgrounds officials published statistics gathered during this year's 20-day fair, including: Competitive exhibits entered (17,481); cell phones turned in to Lost & Found (120), and turkey legs consumed (30,321).

SANDAG bluffs stabilization activities: July 18-24

In its weekly notice to the City of Del Mar, SANDAG covers planned construction activities for the Del Mar Bluffs 5 Stabilization Project. The project is scheduled to continue through mid 2027.
