A Letter from the City Hall/Town Hall Architect

We are very excited to share the progress we’ve made on the Town Hall and City Hall design with you Monday evening, November 2.

The September 28 workshop gave us some thoughtful advice, which we’ve taken to heart. You asked us to move away from the very boxy, modern “school” look and develop a civic center that instead spoke to the residential scale and Del Mar’s character. You sent us back to the drawing board to rethink the flat roofs. Your advice guided us to provide more of a foundation to the buildings at the ground. We heard your concerns on massing, light, glare and noise and have been exploring solutions to address these. You challenged us to look at the plaza in relationship to future expansion areas. And you asked us to show you how the plaza can be used for a variety of community activities.

As a result of your great input, we’ve developed the design quite a lot in the last month and we have responses and options to share with you that address these design directions. This sketch (shown above) is just a preview of the design evolution but I think you can see how the design has improved in many aspects. And we have many more illustrations to share with you Monday night to give you an idea of what this great civic place will be like for Del Mar.

We’re happy that this collaboration with you is moving in this positive direction and we think you will be pleased with the progress. We are looking forward to speaking with you in more detail at Monday’s City Council Meeting and hearing your input.

Sincerely,
Mike Jobes, AIA, Design Principal
