As the Downtown Streetscape Project approaches the finish line, workers this week concentrated on planting the Camino del Mar median and sidewalks.

Separate crews installed iron handrails, guardrails and waste receptacles.

In the new blacktop, street workers installed "loop detectors," or sensors, to activate the traffic signals at 9th and 15th streets.

The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.
