Paving rescheduled to week of Sept. 30

The City has rescheduled the grinding and resurfacing of Camino del Mar and portions of side streets for the week of Sept. 30.

From Monday, Sept. 30, through Friday, Oct. 4, no parking will be permitted on Camino del Mar between 9th Street and the northern Plaza entrance. Traffic lanes and parking on side streets will be subject to intermittent closure.

Grinding and paving operations are loud and dusty and involve truck traffic and multiple pieces of heavy equipment. Residents and business owners are advised to plan accordingly. During the week of Sept. 30, free parking will be available at the Del Mar Plaza and L’Auberge Del Mar. Parking is always free at the Del Mar Civic Center.

Responding to concerns from businesses, the City rescheduled the road work to avoid conflicts with Restaurant Week during the week of Sept. 22.

Flowering crepe myrtles found their new homes on the east side of Camino del Mar between 9th and 11th streets.

In the center median near 10th Street, workers planted one of Del Mar's signature Torrey pines.

In planting areas throughout the project, electrical workers have installed a total of 86 convenience power stations for decorative lighting and other uses.

Another milestone this week included the removal of the last of 16 of the old, concrete streetlight poles.

The new, wood-and-metal street lights -- all 56 of them -- are now energized, bringing a soft and unified glow to Del Mar's clean, well-lighted downtown strip.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $8.1 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through September. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.
