11th Street closure area
Starting Monday, 11th Street just east of Camino del Mar will be closed completely for 11 days.

June 10 to 21: Complete closure of 11th St.

Street and utility work related to the Downtown Streetscape Project will require the complete closure of 11th Street just east of Camino del Mar from June 10 through June 21. About 50 feet of the road surface is scheduled to be removed entirely and lowered about 18 inches to align with newly-built curbs, sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian ramps.

After the road is regraded, the transition from Camino del Mar will be smoother and vehicles will be less likely to scrape their tail ends on the steep incline.

As the road surface must be lowered so must manholes and water valves. Because its depth with be reduced, a water mainline must be encased in concrete to protect it from the weight of vehicles above.

11th Street storm drain

Workers this week completed the installation of 24-inch reinforced concrete pipe crossing Camino del Mar at 11th Street. The pipeline replaces a badly-corroded metal storm drain.

In addition to the pipeline, workers built three cast-in-place storm drain catch basins, or inlets, on the southeast corner of 11th Street. The completion of the inlets and pipeline means that workers can proceed with building sidewalk ramps and brick paver crosswalks at the intersection.

1100 block construction to begin

A final segment of sidewalk construction -- on the 1100 block of southbound Camino del Mar -- is set to begin Monday with the demolition of existing pavement. Workers are scheduled to spend about one month improving this block with new curbs, gutters, sidewalks and parking.

At the north end of the block, a large retaining wall is planned at 12th Street. Plans also call for the installation of seven Silva Cells -- underground systems that capture stormwater and assist with tree growth.

Work on this block is expected to advance from north to south in three sections, with the final section including a combination of brick and concrete sidewalk surfaces.

Parking will be unavailable. Employees and patrons of businesses in the construction area are encouraged to park for free at the Del Mar Civic Center, 1050 Camino del Mar.
