13th Street Crosswalk construction
Workers prepare the 13th Street crosswalk for brick pavers.

Intersection closures

The T intersection at 14th Street and Camino del Mar is scheduled to close from 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. next week to allow for the installation of a paver crosswalk. The closure will affect the immediate work zone only. Maiden Lane and access to a parking garage on the northeast corner of the intersection will remain open. A detour route directs vehicles to 15th and 13th Streets. At the close of each workday, crews will lay steel plates over the crosswalks to reopen the intersection. More paver crosswalk installations, at 13th and 12th streets, are scheduled for next week. During this period, through-access will not be provided after work hours because of narrow roads and safety concerns. Detour routes will send vehicles to 14th and 11th streets.

Downtown Streetscape furnishings are on the Design Review Board agenda for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Del Mar Civic Center. The panel will review proposals for seating, trash and recycling receptacles, newspaper racks and bus shelters (PDF). The Del Mar Village Association, in cooperation with the Business Support Advisory Committee and Arts Advisory Committee, is bringing the furniture choices forward.

The proposed benches and chairs match the wood-and-concrete furnishings already in place just south of Starbucks on Camino del Mar at 15th Street. Trash and recycling receptacles are clad in wood and are similar to those at the Civic Center. The advisory groups have recommended keeping existing newspaper racks that are owned by publishers with sidewalk space made available by permit.

Progress report

Construction activity centered on the 1100 and 1200 blocks this week and is expected to remain on those blocks for the week ahead.

Crews began the demolition and construction of crosswalks at 14th, 13th and 12th streets on the east side of Camino del Mar.

That work will continue next week as well as additional construction on the 1100 block.

Streetscape in a nutshell

The Downtown Streetscape Project will beautify Camino del Mar and improve safety between 9th and Plaza streets. The $6.8 million project includes new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, landscaping, paving and other improvements. Construction is scheduled to run through June. The Downtown Streetscape Project was first envisioned in 1996 as part of a citywide street and sidewalk improvement program.
