Update on Status of Citywide Undergrounding Project (UP)

Work is underway on Del Mar’s citywide undergrounding project (UP) to remove electric and telephone poles and overhead wires, with a number of key decisions set to come before the City Council on October 1, 2018.

This past spring, the City Council appointed eight citizens to work on an advisory committee related to this project to provide policy recommendations to the City Council, along with Councilmember liaisons Ellie Haviland and Terry Sinnott.

The citizens of Del Mar passed Measure Q in November 2016, which is a one-cent percent (1%) sales tax on all items sold in the City of Del Mar.  One of the uses for the money is undergrounding projects throughout the City.

This will be a complex and lengthy project, and the advisory committee is making good progress working through a number of policy issues in order to bring forth recommendations to the City Council for their approval.  The committee has formed three sub-committees to break the project into smaller components.  Those subcommittees are communications; project schedule; and project financing.  In addition, the advisory committee helped draft a scope of work for the City to hire a consultant which will play a large role in managing this project moving forwards on aspects such as coordination with the utilities, development of designs, construction management, and more.
