About the Project
Last February, the City began construction of the Jimmy Durante Boulevard South Streetscape Project. This is the second segment of the Citywide Street, Sidewalk and Drainage Capital Improvement Project.
The construction zone began 150 feet south of San Dieguito Drive on Jimmy Durante Boulevard and extended to the intersection of the Del Mar Plaza and Camino del Mar. The project included installation of approximately 2,500 feet of new curb and gutter, 16,000 square feet of sidewalks, five retaining walls, 2,500 feet of utility pipeline replacement, and 87,300 square feet of pavement rehabilitation. The City contracted with PAL General Engineering, Inc. for this project.
The Jimmy Durante Boulevard Streetscape Project was part of an overall Citywide Street, Sidewalk, and Drainage Capital Improvement Project. The Citywide Street, Sidewalk and Drainage Capital Improvement Projects are intended and designed to improve a number of roadway areas with gaps in sidewalk connectivity along the Camino Del Mar, Jimmy Durante Boulevard, and Via de la Valle public rights-of-way. The projects include new paving, changes to roadway medians and striping to allow the construction of curbs, gutters, pedestrian ramps, and sidewalks to improve pedestrian circulation. There are nine segments designated in the overall project. The projects are funded by TransNet (the half-cent countywide sales tax that helps fund regional transportation projects), as well as funding from an Active Transportation Program Grant, a grant program designed to encourage increased use of active modes of transportation.
