SANDAG's proposed north-south trail would run from Seagrove Park to 4th Street.

Council provides feedback on SANDAG plans for pedestrian access

SANDAG staff on April 17 received City Council feedback on proposed pedestrian access improvements along the Del Mar bluffs, with an undercrossing between 7th and 8th streets and a north-south trail east of the tracks from Seagrove Park to 4th Street identified as design concepts for further study.

The undercrossing concept would connect to either stairs or ramps to the beach.

The Council also asked SANDAG staff to analyze the feasibility of an overcrossing at 10th Street.

In December, SANDAG brought forward seven concepts for pedestrian access and crossings.

The California Coastal Commission has required that the agency complete the improvements as a condition of its approval of SANDAG's Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization Project 5.

Initial cost estimates in the Coastal Connections Conceptual Planning Study show: North-south trail ($9.6 million); 7th-8th streets undercrossing with ramps ($12.8 million); 7th-8th streets undercrossing with stairs ramps ($7 million).

"The next step will be to continue advancing the most promising improvement concepts through a community-focused planning and design process," SANDAG says.

The SANDAG Board of Directors has the final say on which of the proposed improvements get built.

SANDAG is required to build the project within three years from the start of construction of the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization Project 5, which is scheduled to begin at the end of the year or early 2024.

Federal transportation official takes up-close look at Del Mar bluffs

On the invitation of Rep. Mike Levin, Mayor Tracy Martinez rode the COASTER this week with Amit Bose, Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. Also on board was state Sen. Catherine Blakespear.

The elected officials and high-level official from Department of Transportation rode from Sorrento Valley to Solana Beach, getting an up-close look at the railway along the Del Mar Bluffs.

"(Bose) agreed that the train needs to be moved," Martinez reported later. "I believe he will get us more federal funds."

Beaches littered with "By-the-Wind Sailors"

Great numbers of sea creatures washed onto the beach this week. Known as Velellas Velellas โ€” or "By-the-Wind Sailors" โ€” the hydrozoa free-float across the open ocean, catching the wind in tiny "sails."  Researchers say onshore winds and abundant food has led to the rare wash-up.

SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

New! A solid waste series on what goes where

The Sustainability Advisory Committee is talking trash.

As a service to residents, the committee has prepared a series of reminders on what kinds of materials should go into each color of cart โ€” green, gray and blue. We will publish a new reminder every week for the next few months. Our big push is to get folks more familiar with organics recycling and to provide tips on how to deal with the food waste that should go into the green cart.

We thank Del Mar resident Amelie Roy, 12, for creating the Trash Talk mascot. Thanks also to EDCO for being a great partner in recycling.
