City Council to Discuss Short-Term Rentals at the Next Meeting

Over the past year, the Del Mar City Council has heard a number of concerns about the impacts of short-term or vacation rentals. The concerns include: noise, trash, parking, and an overall change to community character when homes are frequently occupied by visitors. The agenda for the City Council meeting on April 4, 2016 includes two separate but related items on this issue. One of the items on the agenda, Agenda Item 8, is a proposed urgency ordinance to establish a temporary moratorium on (new) short-term rentals so that the City has a period of time in which to craft and potentially adopt regulations. The proposed moratorium would allow continued operation of existing short term rentals, which have satisfactorily proven that they were operating before the temporary moratorium was enacted. Another item on the agenda, Agenda Item 11, is to continue Council discussion and solicit public input on the issue to give preliminary direction to staff on whether to move forward in preparing zoning ordinances to allow and regulate short-term rentals. The staff reports for each of these agenda items are posted in the Agenda and Minutes section on the City’s website
