Shores Park Master Plan

Project Status

Following is an update on the Shores Park Master Plan Project with information on upcoming next steps. The City held a workshop on October 18, 2015 in the Winston School Auditorium attended by around 115 people. The event participants provided input on style and character of the potential park amenities - such as types of shade structures and playgrounds. The participants worked in 13 small groups to come up with conceptual design ideas for the park and shared these designs with each other.

Also in October, the City hosted two information booths, one at the Farmer’s Market and another at the Del Mar Art Stroll event, to inform the community about the Shores Park Master Plan project and invite them to the October 18, 2015 workshop.

Looking Ahead

Based on the community input thus far, the landscape architect firm working on the project, Schmidt Design Group, is developing three bubble diagrams - preliminary design concepts for how the park could be laid out - to show to the City Council on January 19, 2016.  Schmidt Design Group will also provide a report on what they learned through the October 18 workshop during this meeting.

As part of the Council discussion on January 19, the Council members will be asked to affirm whether the three design concepts reflect what has been heard so far from the community on their vision for the new park. The purpose of the discussion is not to choose one of the concepts.  Rather, the project team is seeking affirmation to proceed, with elaborating all three concepts and to identify preliminary cost estimates for construction and maintenance of the park.

This effort is in preparation for a third community workshop, scheduled for March 13, 2016. At the March workshop, all the three bubble diagrams will be discussed with the community to determine if there is community preference for one concept in particular and/or to determine if there are elements from any or all of the various concepts the community would like to re-position into one of the other concepts.

Spring outreach for the Shores Park Master Plan will also include more pop-up information booths in the community to seek feedback on the three concepts as well as questions using the “Engage Del Mar” online civic engagement software, and discussion with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.  The goal of all these outreach efforts is ultimately to narrow in on a preferred design for the Park Master Plan to be further evaluated with the community in the following months.
