A lieutenant from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station is reminding residents and business owners to beware of crimes of convenience and opportunity.
In a recent crime of convenience in Del Mar, a burglar gained access to a home using a garage door opener left inside an unlocked car. Prevent crimes by locking your cars and homes and make sure items of value are not left in plain sight inside of vehicles, Lt. Christopher Lawrence said.
On the commercial side, the lieutenant recently reported to Del Mar Village Association that burglars are gaining entry to businesses using keys from lockboxes, which are easily defeated with a crowbar.
Best practices for business owners are to lock doors and windows, activate alarm systems and install high-definition cameras that can capture a suspect's face and vehicle license plate, the lieutenant said.
