During a presentation to the City Council Oct. 3, staff provided a reminder on the rules for Del Mar's dog-friendly beaches.Del Mar provides the only location on the County's north coast where dogs can frolic off-leash. To keep the beach safe and inviting for everyone, the City schedules when and where dog owners can unclip that leash. Times and locations change during peak-season and off-season periods.During the off season, from the day after Labor Day through June 15:

  • Between 29th Street and the Solana Beach border, off-leash dogs are allowed;
  • From dawn to 8 a.m., off-leash dogs are allowed between 25th and 29th streets;
  • Between 29th Street and Powerhouse Park, dogs must be leashed; and
  • Between Powerhouse Park and 6th Street, dogs must be leashed.

No dogs are allowed on Torrey Pines State Beach, which begins at 6th Street and continues southward.On Del Mar beaches, dogs must wear a license on their collars. Leashes may be no longer than six feet. In off-leash areas, dogs must be under voice control. Owners must clean up after their pets.
