A long-awaited landscaping and drainage improvement project at 21st and Court streets is set to began in January and is expected to run through mid-April.
Plans for Court Street Park call for the removal of non-native foliage and planting of new trees and hundreds of shrubs. A 1,000-square-foot patch of turf and monument sign are planned for the northwest corner of the triangular lot. Plans also show walking paths and hardscape.
An important element of the project is to correct the slope of an earthen drainage ditch that crosses the property to the north and west of the tennis courts. Grading and planting of the trench with grasses, rushes and riparian plants is designed to reduce standing water and improve the watercourse’s function as a wetland. Drainage work also includes the replacement of an old, concrete drain outlet.
Two public tennis courts, a half-court for basketball, parking and equipment for the 21st Street Pump Station will remain in place. The courts will remain open during construction.
