Solid Waste Franchise Agreement
Waste Information for Residents & Businesses
The city has an exclusive franchise agreement for the collection of waste and recyclables with Coast Waste Management.
Waste Management is the only franchised waste hauler authorized to provide trash and recycling services to Del Mar residents and businesses. Please visit the Waste Management website for information on the Residential Semi-Automated Cart Collection Program and to apply for carts online. Under this program, residents can select from three different sizes of carts for trash and recycling. Residents use their own cans for yard waste, or can purchase a wheeled cart from Waste Management.
Please see our frequently asked questions section for common questions regarding waste hauling.
Special Services Provided by Waste Management at No Cost
A complete listing of services, including rates and charges, is available on Waste Management's website.
Bulky Waste Item Collection
The new franchise agreement provides three free bulky waste pickups per year with up to five items per pickup. These pickups are scheduled on your regular collection day on a call-in basis by calling 866-WM-RECYCLE.
Holiday Tree Collection & Drop-Off
For the first two weeks after Christmas, you can put out your tree out at curbside on your regular collection day. Holiday trees must not be flocked, and must be free of tinsel and ornaments, and should be cut in half if greater than four feet tall. Waste Management will also have a bin available at the City Public Works Yard at 2240 Jimmy Durante for free disposal during the first three weeks after Christmas.
Confidential Paper Shred Event
Two free confidential paper shredding events per year are provided by Waste Management at the City Hall parking lot. Sharps (used hypodermic needles), unwanted pharmaceuticals and compact fluorescent light bulbs are also accepted. The next event is scheduled for January 19, 2019.
Fuel Reduction Program
A large portion of Del Mar is in the Wildland-Urban Interface zone, which is characterized by a high fire hazard. Residents can improve the fire safety of their property by thinning and disposing of vegetation. Waste Management will help by providing free bins for re-vegetation for a two-week period each year. Events usually take place in summer or fall. Call 858-755-9313 to find out the schedule for this year.
