The Mediterranean fruit fly, also known as the medfly, was detected in the community of Mira Mesa in San Diego on May 20, 2009. On June 9, 2009, medfly larvae were detected in backyard fruit within the eradication area. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is conducting an eradication project to control and eliminate the medfly.
