This past week, the City of Del Mar let go three employees after an independent and impartial investigation found widespread mismanagement and misuse of public funds within the Community Services Department. The investigation uncovered nearly $200,000 in misused funds, falsified payroll records and use of a City credit card for personal use.
After reviewing the findings of the investigation, the decision was clear. The City decided it was best to let the employees go, turn over the evidence from the independent investigation to the Sheriff’s Department for further review, and take steps to ensure these abuses do not occur again.
It is residents who are hurt when public money is misappropriated and misused. The City Council and residents expect city employees to perform their job at a high level and to be held accountable when they fail to do so. Failing to properly investigate and take appropriate action, would be a failure for the entire Del Mar community.
While the investigative process, and time involved, has been challenging, the City feels strongly that the outcome of the investigation and action taken will ensure that all departments and operations meet city standards in providing the highest level of service to our community well into the future.
