Safety Information

Maintaining a Safe Environment
Del Mar has placed a special emphasis on maintaining a safe environment in the community. Del Mar maintains its own municipal Fire Department which is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. All fire employees have completed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training and are certified to operate specialized life-saving defibrillator, combitube, and vehicle extrication equipment as needed. Del Mar’s lifeguards are EMT certified as well with many staff members able to perform swift water and cliff rescues should the need arise. Del Mar also participates in a number of regional safety organizations that provide additional safety services in the community.
Ambulance service is provided via contract with a fully staffed ambulance available in our local area. The city contracts with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for police services and traffic enforcement. Additionally, Del Mar has mutual response agreements in place with other cities and the county should additional resources be needed in the event of a major emergency.

In July 2003, the city deployed a new, full-time park ranger position for an additional law enforcement presence in Del Mar’s beaches and parks. Through this combination of services, Del Mar has maintained an unparalleled record through the proactive deployment of our safety personnel.

Automobile Thefts / Break-Ins
There have been a number of vehicles stolen or broken into in Del Mar due to motorists leaving their vehicles unlocked or hiding their keys on the vehicle while surfing.
Please do your part to reduce the opportunity for crime.
  • Lock your vehicle
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle
  • Do not attempt to hide your keys on the outside of your vehicle
With these small steps, you can reduce your chances of having your vehicle stolen or broken into.

Door-to-Door Solicitors
You should always be cautious when answering your door to strangers. Never feel obligated to open the door unless you feel comfortable in so doing. All legitimate solicitors, selling door-to-door in Del Mar, are required by city regulations to possess, and display upon request, a photo identification card, and a current letter issued and signed by the City of Del Mar approving them as a solicitor within the city. If a solicitor does not have an approved Del Mar Solicitor’s Letter and picture identification, or refuses to show either to you, then please contact the city’s code enforcement officer at 858-704-3651, or send an email.

If you ever feel threatened by a surprise visitor at your door, do not hesitate to call 911 for law enforcement. Solicitors may apply for a Solicitors Letter through the City’s Finance Department. The Finance Department is located in the lower level of City Hall at 1050 Camino del Mar.
